Extraordinary reading progress at Tiwi College, Melville Island

Honey Ants Readers (HARs) author, Marg James has recently been on the road travelling hundreds of kilometres to visit schools around the country using the readers in their literacy programs. Marg was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to one of her favourite schools, Tiwi College on Melville Island, the biggest of the Tiwi Islands. Here, she spent time with Stephanie and her wonderful primary class, doing various small group HAR activities and watching their development. In some cases the progress has been incredible. One student, who when Marg visited in March was on book one, and who has progressed very enthusiastically after playing the card and word games, working on the activity book and competing at bingo games, had completed book 15! She was able to recount the stories without a book in front of her, her favourite being Book 14, ‘Big Man Grab Sister’. The older students are also progressing well with their HAR reading, and it is so exciting and an enormous privilege to have the opportunity to visit classrooms, chat to brilliant teachers and witness learners’ success!
