Jessica Mauboy learning Central Arrernte language through the Honey Ant Readers
Young Central Arrernte children are very excited to be teaching Jessica Mauboy their language through the Honey Ant Readers! The card games which teach the vocabulary, precede reading “Aperlele Tnyeme Ahelhe Athetheke Kwene”. The team of translators who worked on this book were Benedict Stevens, Margaret Heffernan, Joyce Palmer and Jackie Silverton.
Strong oral language is the foundation of learning to read.
A ‘learner’ who has a larger vocabulary than the text he/she is reading will have an advantage in learning to ‘decode’. Let’s not forget to prioritise ‘speaking time’ with our children!
