HARs at the TAFE English Language and Literacy Services (TELLS) conference 2012
Last week, HARs Sales manager, Phil Browne attended the TAFE English Language and Literacy Services (TELLS) conference at the Mercure Hotel in Brisbane to showcase the HAR series. The conference was a PD event for around 300 TAFE teachers of the AMEP (Adult Migrants English Program ) and LLNP ( Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program ). Workshops covered a wide range of issues including inclusivity, engaging indigenous clients, iBooks and ebooks and using music in the classroom. The programs focus was on adults however there was interest in the principles on which HAR is based.
Phil reported that “all visitors to our stand were impressed with the quality and presentation of the HAR books, cards and CDs on display”. Many participants enquired as to whether the HAR were available for adult learners. The HARs are designed to appeal to learners of all ages-the themes, illustrations and characters are not infantile and thus could be used for any learner on their reading journey. Many teachers attending the conference who teach students from China and South East Asia also enquired about developing the HAR for learners of other languages. We have begun designing a series for learners of Mandarin, the first book has been published as “My Kite” and more are in development – we will keep you posted as more are release in coming months!
