Reading Workshop at Gillen School, Alice Springs

We had great fun running our reading workshop at Gillen School in Alice Springs last term, with a big group of parents and their beautiful, bright children.

During the session parents read the HAR ‘Colours’ book to their children, then played colours bingo and a colours memory card game with together. We had fun with our new colours rhyme, practised stretching to reach our toes in the ‘Body’ song and of course dug for honey ants while singing ‘Nana dig’.  We did get a bit carried away with the food dye and play-dough activity, with lots of multi-coloured fingers running out the door at the end of the day!

The school provided a delicious afternoon tea which the enthusiastic young children took great delight in handing round.

Overall feedback from the session was very positive.  All parents said they enjoyed the session and that they had learned skills that would help them to read with their child.  Parents mentioned games, colouring, bingo, singing, and simple words as the most enjoyable activities in the session.  We hope we will be able to run more successful sessions like these in the future!

We got a bit carried away with our ‘colours’ theme, seeing what colours we could turn our play dough using yellow, red, blue and green food colouring, so hope that multi-coloured little fingers washed clean tonight!
